Our latest interviewee in the Meet Our Team series is Group Managing Director, David Kimmer. Read on to find out more about his path to success and his hidden talents.
Can you tell us about yourself and your role?
I am the original founder of creative and digital communications agency Group Brand, acquired by Loveurope and Partners in 2016. Rebranded LEAP in 2018, I still run and manage the business operations of the Chichester office on a day-to-day basis but now play an active role as part of the central leadership team with my recent appointment as Group MD.
How did you get into the advertising and marketing industry?
I studied for a degree in Graphic Information Design at Falmouth College of Arts and as part of my four-year course I spent eight months on an industrial work placement at a boutique design agency. It was here that I discovered my passion (and talent) for digital design and development which has shaped my professional career and ultimately gave me the experience, skills, knowledge and confidence to start up my own agency.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Although originally a designer/developer by trade, I found that running a business, and all the challenges that come with it, much more satisfying and rewarding; especially the commercial and financial aspects of my role. I also maintain a passion for writing and supporting our own proprietary software that both automates and streamlines business workflow.
What achievement are you most proud of?
Starting my own agency in 2004 aged 28 and building it into a successful and profitable business of 30 full-time staff before selling it a little over ten years later.
Do you have any hidden talents or interesting hobbies?
I used to watch the credits of 80’s soap operas and still possess an uncanny ability to recall the real names of the actors by replaying them in my head; a party trick I’m often asked to demonstrate.
I am also a sponsored rider for my local windsurfing shop (Duotone/Fanatic/ION), a sport that has been an integral part of my life since I was 13 years old, despite not getting as much time on the water as I would like.
Who is your inspiration?
Ron Dennis, the former owner, CEO, chairman and founder of the McLaren Technology Group. His relentless pursuit of excellence and meticulous attention to detail is inspirational. A man of complex character, Ron is considered to be both gauche and self-deprecating in personality (not unlike myself), yet he is a brilliant businessman.
What’s your biggest motivation?
As an artistic pupil in an academically-biased education system, my desire to be revered and successful in my professional life has kept me focussed and driven throughout my career.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in this field?
Academic results are no substitute for raw talent and a strong work ethic. I would rather employ someone based on their ability and attitude rather than how impressive their CV reads.
